CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

As soon as the drizzle stopped, the fog disappeared. They all got a rare view of the mountaintops around them in their full glory.

But Jem had no eyes for her surroundings as they climbed Beinn Luibhean and then crossed the pass to Beinn Ime. She trudged along behind the other witches, her eyes mainly on the ground, trying to ignore Luc.

Jem was ashamed about what she had let happen the night before. There was still a voice of reason in her head that told her she couldn’t just believe everything Luc said. She wondered what was wrong with her that she found him so irresistible, knowing that. And she felt even more shame that her thoughts kept revolving around what had happened in the bothy instead of how to rescue her sisters.

The hike was pretty strenuous, and it wasn’t always possible to walk side by side. Finally, Jem had enough of her own confused thoughts. She barged forward, trying to fall into step next to Fionna. She needed to talk to her about the important issues, so whatever had happened with Luc could be forgotten.

Fionna was eager to hear about everything Luc had told Jem the previous night, so they fell a few steps behind the others as they talked.

“How were the Tempestarii able to find and intercept the car despite the protective spell?” Jem asked, after she’d summarized Luc’s story.

“You know how difficult it is to keep an effective protection spell on a moving object,” Fionna replied, out of breath.

The red-haired coven leader was no longer as overweight as she used to be, but she was far from athletic.

“My father said they had help. Most likely, they hired a service provider. A mage.”

“Great,” Jem groaned. “Besides this weather witch cult, we have another one of those on our hands.”

“Hiring someone with magical abilities wouldn’t be unusual for the Tempestarii,” Luc chimed in.

They hadn’t noticed him falling behind too, listening in on their conversation.

Jem gave him a dirty look.

“Historically, they have often employed mages to take care of things they can’t themselves,” Luc continued, unperturbed. “The real question is where Leclerc got the money for it. It would be very expensive.”

“Thanks for giving us insight into how your group operates,” Jem said with a sharp voice, putting emphasis on the word your.

It irked her that Luc was talking about the Tempestarii as if he hadn’t belonged to them his entire life and hadn’t only recently severed himself from them.

“Since you’re already taking part in the conversation, I’d like to know your thoughts about my sisters’ kidnapping. It occurs to me you never said outright who the target of your operation was. I had the impression you didn’t know, but maybe I was mistaken. I thought my mother or I had to be the intended sacrificial victim, but strangely, the Tempestarii left my mother alone. Were you aware that my sisters—children—were the targets?”

“Severine didn’t tell me who was to be sacrificed. I didn’t know which Rivers⁠—”

“That’s not what I mean, Luc,” Jem interrupted.
